CHICAGO
Chicago is located in northeastern Illinois at the southwestern tip of Lake Michigan. Chicago is also referred to as the "Windy City", "Chi-Town", "Second City," and the "City of Big Shoulders". Chicago is a lively city with plenty to see and do. The city is home to two Major League Baseball teams, the Chicgo Cubs on the city's North Side, in Wrigley Field, while the Chicago White Sox play in U.S Cellular Field on the city's South Side.
Accommodation
Down town inexpensive accommodation can be difficult to find, it is best to search around the edges in places such as the east side of the city e.g. the Gold Coast, Old Town & Lincoln Park, Lake View & Wrigley Ville, Wicker Park & Buck town. These are all by the lake; this is definitely preferable because it's where the beach & recreational activities are. The majority of J1ers head to the north side of Chicago. This area is surrounded by many local students. You may be able to sublet accommodation from local university students heading home for the summer.

Job Hunting
There are certain areas in which there are more jobs. Jobs are plentiful down on Navy Pier.
Check out the cruise boats particularly Ugly Duckling and the Spirit Of Chicago / Shore Lines and the IMAX Theatre.
Construction Jobs are available. The other trick our students gave us this year was to go to all Irish bars in Wrigley Field at lunchtime. Apparently if you get in and look respectable once your Irish and early in the season your sorted! Please note you cannot serve alcohol until you are over 21 which eliminates bar server / bar tending positions.
In Water Tower Place there is a big shopping Mall, which also has jobs available.
Check out Mackinac Island and Cedar point Amusement park, the Wisconsin Dells and the laid back city of Milwaukee. Minneapolis offers huge employment; lots of entertainment and the university areas are a source of sublet accommodation for the summer.

FLORIDA
Florida is the second largest state of the US after Georgia. It is located in the extreme southeastern US, east of the Mississippi River. Florida with its beautiful beachfront cities is a massive tourism destination. The three main destinations that are most popular to J1 students are Miami and Orlando. Miami provides fabulous beaches and all year round great weather. The 15miles of glorious beaches make it a great destination of choice for the water sports enthusiast. Orlando located in Central Florida is home to all the great theme parks.

Job Hunting
Miami is a vibrant and exciting city and also boasts a large selection of fine restaurants, museums, lively nightspots and great shopping. South Beach and Miami Beach you will find that jobs will be very easy to come by here as these would be the main tourism spots. The best way would be handing out your resumes to all the different restaurants, retail shops, bars and clubs.
The best places to look for jobs in Orlando would be Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios, the Wet 'N Wild Water Park, Gatorland and the Epcot Centre. The Orlando area offers visitors over 90 attractions, approximately 3,800 restaurants, 44 million square ft. of shopping plazas and 125 golf courses. So if you email the big tourism attractions before you leave Ireland and you should have no problem in finding a job.

CAPE COD
If you are in search of a summer of sun, sea and sand Cape Cod is the place to be. 'The Cape' as it is most commonly known is a 65 mile long hook jutting out into the Atlantic. It is home to 77 beaches.
It is a very quiet, quaint area with lots of old affluent Americans. The Cape's population triples in the summertime.
Accommodation
The most popular area is Hyannis followed by Falmouth and Dennis port. Provincetown is the most northerly town on the Cape and has a vibrant and funky atmosphere. The Main Street in Hyannis is where everything takes place so Streets off this would be the best places to live in e.g. Sea St, Ocean St, Gosnould St, or Nautical St.
Accommodation is difficult to find and can be very expensive. Expect to pay $100-$130 per week. A useful website is http://capecod.craigslist.org/hsw/. The Hyannis Area Chamber Of Commerce will have a list of the Rental Agents who are providing accommodation for the summer.

NEW YORK
Accommodation
When searching for accommodation in New York it is important to note that there are subsections within New York itself and some of these are cheaper than others. In General the cheapest areas are Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx.
Columbia University is very useful in providing student accommodation information and it would be very wise to check out their website before you go www.columbia.edu/cu/ire.
As with finding Accommodation in any area reading local publications is always useful. Our previous j1ers recommended the village voice published every Tuesday.
If you find yourself stuck when you get to New York don’t fret there are plenty of short-term hostels to stay in while you find you J1 pad. In the past students have recommended: Chelsea international Hostel 251 West 20th Street. Hostelling International on Amsterdam Avenue 891 Amsterdam Avenue

MAUI, HAWAII
There are eight main islands when we think of Hawaii. Home to Sandy beaches, towering volcanoes, and lush valleys lure thousands of tourists each year to this tropical paradise. Native Hawaiians have held on to many of their customs and traditions despite the influx of non-natives over the years. Hawaii is the only state that has an official native language.
Accommodation
Though jobs are easy to get, accommodation is not! It's recommended you arrange accommodation before you ever leave Ireland. If you get a job sorted make sure to ask your employer if they will provide you with accommodation aswell or if they can recommend somewhere for you.
Overcrowding is the only way to afford accommodation. You will be paying as much as $600 per week for a two-bed apt. The majority of J1ers who traveled to Maui in previous summers have stayed in the Spinnaker Apartments http://www.thestateofhawaii.com/apartments.html or Phone: (808) 667 9028. The normal rent in these apartments is approximately $560 per week for a 2-bed apt.
The Ohana Maui Islander and Front Street Apartments are worth checking out for accommodation, and the advantage of these two places is that they would not require you to sign a six month lease.
The local newspapers are very useful for advertising houses for leasing:
www.mauinews.net www.honoluluadvertiser.com/ www.hawaiitribuneherald.com
Job Hunting
The best jobs to secure in Maui are waiters and waitresses, bars, hotels and different resorts. Most J1ers secure a job within a week or so. We recommend that you try and secure a job or at least an Interview before you leave Ireland, that way your first few days in paradise won't be spoiled by stressing over getting a job.
Bubba Gump Shrimp employ between 70-100 people, so definitely apply for a job here. Email: lwatase@bubbagump.com
The Sugar Cane Train is a tourist train that travels from Lahaina to Kaanapali. Previous J1ers have secured jobs on the train as photographers. Website: www.sugarcanetrain.com
The retail outlets along Front Street and in Lahaina are always worth dropping into - some include The Gap Inc., ABC Stores, Starbucks and Dairy Queen.
Condo Cleaning is quite a lucrative business over in Hawaii, so do check it out. The best way to go about getting this kind of work is to call in directly to the reception at condos or apartments and ask about the work. A goodweb page to keep an eye on is http://www.maui.net/~mauinews/ads146.html, where ads for cleaners and housekeepers are regularly posted.

SAN DIEGO
San Diego was one of the most popular destinations for J1’ers last year. A combination of both beach and city makes it so appealing. It is however important to note that the job market can be quite competitive so it is best to get in early and have your research done.
Accommodation
Accommodation is easy enough to come by in San Diego; the best areas to stay seem to be Ocean, Pacific and Mission Beach. It is important to check local publications daily for accommodation and in the mean time if you find your self in San Diego with nowhere to stay then the Capri Motel could be for you. Short term Accommodation at 150 dollars per week makes it ideal to stay in until you find a place and it has the added bonus of being recommended by last years students.

SAN FRANCISCO
It is the fourth most popualr city in California and it is a very popular tourism destination which is most famous for the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island and the cable cars. San Francisco is part of the San Francisco Bay Area, which is home to more than 7.1 million people. The city is located at the tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, with the Pacific Ocean to the west, San Francisco Bay to the east, and the Golden Gate to the north.
Acommodation
The majority of J1 students live in Berkeley. Most stay in frat houses. Frats and Sororities in Berkeley are definitely the best way to get cheap accommodation, frats especially as they are mixed and really cheap. Sororities accommodate females only and not all of them rent. Average costs run about $500-$700 for a room for the summer.
Other students stayed in San Francisco, many in the Post Street Apartments. Accommodation in the city although still expensive is easier to come by, some popular places to live around would be Bay Area, Nob Hill, Little Italy and Berkeley. Expect to pay approx $150 per week.
You can also email Berkeley College to obtain Student Summer Sublet listings. Email:homeinfo@berkeley.edu
Check out the off campus listings in the housing section: www.uscf.edu. This is probaly more useful when you get there but try it now and see if you can get anything.

The restaurants, pizza places, coffee shops, stores and bars on Pier 39 on the San Francisco Bay would be the most likely to need additional help during the summer tourist season. Pier 39 is the most 'touristy' place in San Francisco. Check out www.pier39.com
Try also the main tourist spots such as the Aquarium of the Bay, Blue and Gold Fleet, Pier 39 Marina, Riptude Arcade and The Underwater World. Westfield and Union Square shopping malls would also be looking for summer staff!
For those living in Berkeley the downside is many students can not find employment in Berkeley and are forced to commute to San Fran to work.

NEWPORT - RHODE ISLAND
This is the smallest state in the US but boasts over 400 miles of shoreline. This is a lively and popular spot. Newport is located 45mins from Providence and approx 1 hour from Boston City. Newport is such a small state that bicycles are used by most people.

The best method of finding work is going from door to door and asking about vacant positions. You may think that you will get a job as a waiter/ waitress and make a fortune, we are sorry to say that this does not often happen. The good waiting jobs are usually held from year to year, but try anyway, you never know! You will be expected to stay in Montauk and work until Labour Day, which is the first Monday in September. Most people receive bonuses based on whether or not they stay until this date.
