For any student contemplating doing a J1, I would recommend it in a heartbeat. Whether with friends or alone you will have a blast. I went to Nantucket by myself and ended up making friends for life who I’ve already planned trips with for next year.

Coming straight out of lockdown, there was only one thing on our mind for our first summer back in a post-COVID world- and that was spending our last summer of college in America.

Chicago for me was the perfect place to spend my J1, often described as a mix between New York and Los Angeles. The beaches along Lake Michigan are perfect for relaxing on your days off work in the Chicago’s hot summers.

The decision to go on a J1 wasn’t a tough one to make- spend a summer going to and from work in Ireland versus in San Diego? I’ve yet to meet anyone who’d turn down an opportunity like that. The chance to have some independence that I don’t get living at home wasn’t something I was likely to pass on.
