Read SAYIT's advice on and contact information for accommodation and J1 summer job hunting in San Diego, California, USA.
San Diego is one of the most popular destinations for J1ers. What makes it so appealing is the combination of beach and city. It is however important to note that the job market can be quite competitive so it can be quite difficult to get a job before you travel.
Accommodation
It's a really good idea to book a hostel in advance for a few days for when you first arrive in SanDiego. Two weeks in a hostel is recommended as finding accommodation here is extremely difficult. This will give you the chance to check out some places to rent while getting a feel for the city.
There are often signs up all in the city advertising apartments that are available for rent so keep your eyes open while exploring. Most of you will have heard that Pacific and Mission beaches are the best places to stay along with San Diego State University.
Other than this, we advise you not to limit yourself to the University and beaches. There are other options available also. Try Ocean Beach, Point Loma, downtown or even places a bit more inland like Mission or Fashion Valley. If you stay in any of these areas, you're never more than 30 minutes away from the beach. Look in local newspapers and even try agencies like Penny Realty on Mission Boulevard.
If you find yourself with nowhere to stay then Capri by the Sea could be for you. It was recommended by our previous students as short-term accommodation until you find a place.
