Newport is a very safe area so I would definitely recommend going there for a J1 from that aspect alone. For those of us who preferred a bigger city vibe, it was about an hour away from Providence via bus and 2 hours away from Boston.

I was sick of the routine of working in my part time job, which would have ended up being full time for summer. If I was going to work full time, why not do it in America? I wanted a change of scenery and to make new memories with new people. I wanted to broaden my horizons and push myself past my comfort zone.

For any student contemplating doing a J1, I would recommend it in a heartbeat. Whether with friends or alone you will have a blast. I went to Nantucket by myself and ended up making friends for life who I’ve already planned trips with for next year.
