Huntington Beach is known as "Surf City" and is the birth place of America's surfing culture. The city plays host to the World Surfing Championship each summer, and serious surfers can be found here all year round riding the waves. Surf, sand, sun and subtle sophistication encapsulate what the City of Huntington Beach is all about.

The city offers some of the largest stretches of beaches in all of California, in addition to one of the longest concrete piers in the entire world. As many as 500,000 visitors flock to the sandy white beaches during the peak season to escape the heat and humidity inland making it a great busy place to enjoy your summer in the states.


Accommodation can be difficult to find for the three to four months you will be living and working in Huntington Beach. A good idea is to take a look at the student accommodation as many students will be in a position to rent their apartments for the summer period.

Huntington Breakers offers rental apartments which is only 10 minutes walk from the Main Street.  They have a clubhouse that you can lounge in with your neighbours and a pool to share as well.

Job Hunting

The majority of summer jobs for J1 students in Huntington Beach are found on Main Street. This street is filled with countless surf shops, clothing stores, cafés, restaurants and bars.

Knotts Berry Farm is only 15 minutes from Huntington Beach.  They should also have several job opportunities as they act as both a theme park and hotel.
