Nantucket

Read SAYIT's advice on and contact information for accommodation and J1 summer job hunting in Nantucket, Massachusetts, USA.

Nantucket is an island off Cape Cod, a popular summer destination with dune-packed beaches. The wharves and cobblestoned streets of the town are lined with restaurants, high-end boutiques and steepled churches, giving students lots to see and do over the summer.

Accommodation

This lovely island is very expensive for accommodation (be expected to pay anything from $150 to $200 per week). Anywhere along Milestone Road, Appleton and Essex Road are generally more affordable, with lots of J1ers living here for the summer. There is also a notice board in the centre of Nantucket called ’The Hub’ which is on the Main St and it has accommodation leads. Also, you are advised to ask the local people because everyone on the island knows of vacancies.

Check out Nantucket Accommodation for houses or cottages for rent.  They charge a finder's fee of $50.  The online newspaper is also helpful for accommodation and jobs.

Job Hunting

Employment is relatively easy to find and it is mostly restaurants and retail stores. The local supermarket Stop N' Shop is also a good option for jobs as they take on many extra staff in the summer. Waitressing is by far the best way to earn money. The biggest earners are in local restaurants down around the Wharf, The Rope Walk, Eat Fire Spring, Queequeg's and 21 Federal.
